Speaking as an atheist, I don’t mind hearing ‘Merry Christmas.’ For a great many of us, it’s a secular holiday. The celebration draws upon non-Christian traditions from the Greeks, Romans, Celts and, Norse. Christians are late-comers to the idea of a winter celebration, so late that they co-opted the preexisting winter holiday traditions of other cultures.

Elementary school teachers use Comic Sans because it roughly approximates handwriting, isn’t a serif font, and presents the type of letter formation they teach. That is to say, there aren’t any embellishments on G, W, M and so forth. There are better, free handwriting fonts available on the web, but teachers invariably choose a font that comes presupplied on their computer.

The lack of italics is probably due to Facebook’s choice of Lucida Sans/Grande for the site. I don’t blame them for the choice — Lucida is probably the most versatile and readable websafe font available at small px sizes — but I do blame Apple for not including an italic in OS X. This omission has prevented web designers from calling Lucida Grande Italic in their stylesheets and we all suffer.
